My 3rd going into 4th struggles with reading. We met with a specialist all year, and she's made great strides. What she really needs now is sustained reading. So, I made up a chart with 200 spaces on it. About every 7 spaces has a prize--serious prizes. Each square means a chapter from a book read or a child's book (so, a Junie B. chapter counts the same as reading a whole Angelina Ballerina). This has proved to be an excellent motivation. And so far, I've purchased a tool box, a screwdriver, pliers (yes, these were HER choice for prizes!), a set of ear phones, popcorn and soda at Target, and a large chocolate bar. If she gets to 100, she gets her ears pierced. If she gets to 200, she earns a telescope, something she's been saving for and longing for all year.

We figured compared to the amount of money we spent on the specialist, this amount of money on prizes to get her actually READING will be well worth it.

C.J. Sansom mystery books which are set in the time of the reformation in the court of Henry VIII, and I am really liking those.  I also plan to re-read the whole Jack Whyte Camaloud series.   I am not looking at any of these right now, and I may have spelled any or all incorrectly!

@TeacherPerson - That is an awesome idea!  I did something similar, made up a board game where the spots were filled in by reading books of different levels.  I called it "The Road to Reading" and all of the prizes were more books!

It sounds like you have a great way to motivate your child.  This is the kind of thing that no outside teacher or specialist could ever duplicate.

Ears pierced huh?  Gosh, I remember BEGGING to have that done at that age!  It was like the be all and end all of my existence!
